Every Army service member hits a specific decision window at some point. Should you stay at your current base, or should you go and explore other bases? While much of the reenlistment focus centers on the contract itself, where you will go next receives less attention.

In many cases, a service member can request a specific duty station as part of their reenlistment contract. This is often done through reenlistment options or incentives, depending on your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), rank, and the service member’s current needs. Meaning, you can choose your station if it aligns with those.

The thing is, it is not always guaranteed. Some factors, such as availability, timing, and assignment priorities, need to be considered when determining what will be offered. Regardless, you could still have the chance to choose, and it doesn’t hurt to prepare!

In this piece, we will take you through the top CONUS and OCONUS Army stations so you can decide which options best suit your needs, so you can be ready for your reenlistment.

CONUS and OCONUS During Reenlistment

During reenlistment, one of the main decisions to consider is whether to stay in the Continental U.S. (CONUS) or request an Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) assignment. It’s also important to know the distinction between the two.

CONUS assignments provide consistency and easier access to support systems since you’re much closer to family. There are also generally more options for off-base housing and schooling, and locations are often better for long-term planning.

In CONUS assignments, you also know how things work. Meaning there are fewer unknowns, and that especially matters when you want to stay focused on your next step.

However, OCONUS assignments offer a different operational environment. Many overseas bases support forward-deployed missions that could provide valuable experiences. Plus, it can also give you access to different cultures and travel opportunities.

For some, during OCONUS assignments, it feels less like a job and more like an experience you won’t get anywhere else. However, the trade-off includes distance from family and fewer employment options for spouses. And you can’t choose the specific station; therefore, you can only choose the country you want to be in.

Neither option is universally better, and keep in mind that the right choice depends on your career goals, family situation, and personal preferences.

Top CONUS Army Duty Stations

We sourced the top CONUS duty stations so you don’t have to! These stations are commonly chosen for their balance of mission opportunities and quality of life.

Fort Carson

Fort Carson supports a range of Army units and offers consistent training opportunities. It’s located near Colorado Springs, which provides access to medical facilities, schools, and civilian job markets.

The area is also known for outdoor activities, which can improve off-duty quality of life. For many service members, having that outlet outside work makes life better! Who doesn’t love that? However, this station might not be for you if you’re not a fan of winter.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord

This post is a joint base with access to multiple training environments. Since it’s located near Tacoma and Seattle, it has access to major healthcare systems. It’s not that hard to love, since for many families, access to that can make life more manageable!

The catch is that the cost of living might be higher than average. Housing can also be pretty costly in this area.

Top OCONUS Locations

When choosing OCONUS assignments, service members can typically choose a country location rather than a specific station. Meaning, you can’t specifically choose a duty station. For example, you may request Korea, Germany, or Japan, but not a specific base within those regions or countries.

Germany

Anywhere in Germany! The country supports a large U.S. military presence, and it’s a central hub for operations in Europe. It also offers many architectural styles to explore. Healthcare, schools, and support services are top-notch here as well.

If you’re someone who loves to travel, Germany is the way to go because you can travel across Europe during off-duty time.

South Korea

South Korea is one of the most common OCONUS assignments. If you’re assigned here, expect training to be often fast-paced and focused on readiness.

However, being near major cities like Seoul gives you more options for food, entertainment, and activities off duty. You will easily fall in love with South Korea!

Japan

Japan is also a key location for U.S. military operations in the Indo-Pacific. Plus, the overall day-to-day experience of living there is also top-notch. The convenience, access to public transport, clean cities, and overall safety are all in one country! What more could you ask for?

Assignments in Japan are also typically more stable, which can help if you’re looking for consistency while still gaining overseas experience.

How to Choose the Right Duty Station for You

The best duty station for reenlistment is always a personal decision. You want to consider what is best for you and the people around you, because what works for one service member might not work for another.

What you need now may not be what you needed during your last contract, and that’s okay. Reenlistment is your chance to adjust. So again, it doesn’t matter if your station is in CONUS or OCONUS.

The Army just gives you the structure through CONUS and OCONUS assignments, but your choice is what still matters in the path you want to take forward.
