All pets must be registered with the Fort Lee Veterinary Treatment Facility. There is a one-time fee charged per pet, and pets must be on-leash at all times when not inside the home.

Additionally, it’s important to know that all dogs and cats being kept as pets in Prince George’s County, where Fort Lee is located, must be licensed with the County.

Off-Base Housing

Housing referral services are available through the Military Housing Office. Housing referral services include providing a list of approved and non-approved apartment complexes and mobile home parks or a list of currently available properties in the local area.

Military Preferred Living Areas

There are many great housing options available within easy commuting distance of Fort Lee, specifically in the Virginia Tri-Cities region, Prince George’s County, and Chesterfield County.

Virginia Tri-Cities

The Virginia Tri-Cities region refers to the cities of Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Hopewell, which border the northwest corner of Prince George’s County very close to Fort Lee.

While housing costs are slightly lower in all three of the cities and the commute to base is short, you’ll want to research housing locations closely. Of the three, Colonial Heights is the safest area to live in, with better local amenities. It also has the strongest school district of the three by far.

Median listing home price: $277,425

Median sold home price: $271,700

Median rental rate: $1,250/month

Notable towns and cities with estimated drive time to main gate:

  • Colonial Heights (15m)
  • Petersburg (15m)
  • Hopewell (15m)

Prince George’s County, VA

Military families love Prince George's County for its quiet, suburban-rural feel and relatively affordable housing. The local communities of Prince George, South Prince George, and Disputanta are all within an easy commuting distance of Fort Lee. Families will also appreciate the consistent quality of schools in the district across grade levels.

Median listing home price: $399,450

Median sold home price: $348,000

Median rental rate: $1,800/month

Notable towns and cities with estimated drive time to main gate:

  • Prince George (10m)
  • South Prince George (20m)
  • Disputanta (20m)

Chesterfield County, VA

Chesterfield County is located to the north of Fort Lee, between the installation and Richmond, VA. The majority of communities in this county are suburban or rural-suburban. Chester and Chesterfield are well-liked Richmond suburbs with a reasonable commute to Fort Lee.

However, they may not be great options for families with children, as school quality is lower in this part of the county compared to others. Families looking for higher quality schools might want to consider Winterpock, Midlothian, or other areas in the northwestern part of the county (though this will increase commute time to base considerably).

Median listing home price: $569,000

Median sold home price: $432,500

Median rental rate: $2,695/month

Notable towns and cities with estimated drive time to main gate:

Prince George County Public Schools

Prince George County Public Schools is a small district serving just over 6,000 students across 7 schools. According to Niche, this is an above-average district with a B+ grade. Every school in the district has been recognized as a Virginia Purple Star School for Excellence in Supporting Military Families.

Niche scores the elementary schools in the district particularly well, but it’s worth noting that the Virginia Department of Education School Quality Profile recognizes Prince George High as a distinguished school academically. Families living on base don’t need to worry about the quality of education their children will receive – Prince George's County Public Schools has you covered.

Chesterfield County Public Schools

Chesterfield County Public Schools is a much larger school district serving over 60,000 students across 66 schools. While Niche gives the district an overall B+ grade, there is a broader range of individual school grades across the district, with some receiving A’s and many others in the C range.

Notably, at the high school level, Chesterfield County Public Schools offers a range of specialty centers focused on different topic areas (i.e. STEM or Arts), as well as International Baccalaureate programs. The majority of the district’s stronger schools are located in the northwest part of the district, farthest from Fort Lee. Depending on your willingness to commute, living in the areas zoned for these schools might be feasible.

Colonial Heights City Public Schools

Colonial Heights City Public Schools is a small school district serving the independent city of Colonial Heights. The district has five schools that serve just under 3,000 students.

Niche gives the district an above average rating, with most schools receiving at least a B grade, and according to the Virginia DOE School Quality Profile all but the district’s middle school are performing on track academically.

Petersburg City Public Schools

Petersburg City Public Schools is a comparatively weaker district than others in the Fort Lee area. Niche gives the overall district a C-, and according to the Virginia DoE, none of the schools in this district are on track academically.

This school district is just west of Fort Lee, and is one that families with school-aged children may want to avoid when looking for a home off-base.

Hopewell City Public Schools

Similarly, Hopewell City Public Schools is also a weak district with an overall C- grade from Niche and underperforming schools according to the Virginia DoE School Quality Profiles. This school district is just north of Fort Lee, and is one that families with school-aged children may want to avoid when looking for a home off-base.

Dinwiddie County Public Schools

Dinwiddie County Public Schools is another slightly above-average school district serving students in Dinwiddie County (west of Petersburg and Prince George’s County). The district has an overall B grade according to Niche, but school quality varies.

Families looking to settle off-base in this school district may want to do some additional research on individual school quality depending on the grade level of their children.

Private Schools

There are also a number of private and faith-based schools near Fort Lee that families may wish to consider. Please reach out to the School Liaison for more information about private schools in the area.
