The holiday season is often associated with warmth, generosity, and togetherness. For military families, however, this time of year can be both meaningful and challenging. Deployments, financial strain, frequent relocations, and long periods away from loved ones can complicate what is traditionally a season of celebration.

Fortunately, many military-focused charities step in each holiday season to ensure service members, Veterans, and their families feel supported, valued, and remembered. From providing toys for children to delivering meals, care packages, and financial assistance, these organizations play a critical role in easing burdens and restoring a sense of normalcy.

Having experienced these challenges firsthand during my husband Ben’s 42-month fleet tour—which included three deployments, two of them beginning on the Monday after Thanksgiving—I know how impactful these resources can be. I only wish I had known about many of them at the time.

Below is a curated guide to reputable, military-friendly charities making a meaningful difference during the holiday season, organized by the type of support they provide.

Toys and Holiday Joy for Children of All Ages

Military children often face unique emotional challenges, especially during the holidays when a parent may be deployed or the family is adjusting to a new duty station. These organizations focus on bringing joy, stability, and memorable holiday moments to children of all ages.

Fisher House Foundation

Best known for providing free lodging near military medical centers, Fisher House also supports holiday meals and comfort initiatives for families caring for wounded, injured, or ill service members.

Financial and Emergency Assistance

Unexpected expenses can be especially difficult during the holidays. These organizations provide critical financial relief when military families need it most.

Military Relief Societies

Army Emergency Relief, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and Air Force Aid Society offer emergency financial assistance for essentials such as food, utilities, travel, and short-term holiday-related hardships.

USA Cares

USA Cares provides financial support to post-9/11 Veterans and military families, helping cover rent, utilities, and basic necessities during times of crisis, including the holiday season.

Giving Back to Those Who Serve All Year Long

Military families sacrifice every day, but the holidays can intensify feelings of separation and stress. Supporting military-friendly charities is a meaningful way to honor that service and ensure families are not overlooked during the season of giving.

Whether through donating, volunteering, or sharing their missions, these organizations transform compassion into action—bringing comfort, joy, and hope to military families when it matters most.

Their commitment to serving those who serve deserves recognition not just during the holidays, but all year long.
